Towards robust synchronous belts: influence of surface characteristics on interfacial adhesion

The use of carbon fibres is being explored in synchronous belts due to their excellent mechanical properties, chemical and dimensional stability. However, poor adhesion between the common rubber-fibre adhesive resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex (RFL) compromises load transfer these constituents. We examined influence surface characteristics commercial glass fibres, such as fibre chemistry, energy area on fibre-RFL matrix model single composites. Fibres with higher oxygen content thus more polar functional groups resulting a exhibited better RFL. Fibre behaviour RFL can be ranked using aspect ratio diameter critical fragment length assessed by fragmentation tests, however, accurate interfacial shear strength values cannot obtained Kelly-Tyson statistical limitations treatment tensile properties. Our results provide insight into factors affecting identified T700GC-31E candidates for improved fibre-matrix production robust belts.
